Oregon Fuel Price Variance

Fuel Market News

Prices jumped across the board this past week, as gas and diesel both went up in price on their rack averages. Rack averages for E10 jumped $0.05/gal while B5 & B20 jumped $0.04/gal. The Labor Day weekend didn’t see much of a price jump compared to years past. Current retail prices are nearly a dollar lower than they were last year. With low demands, fuel prices stayed low throughout the summer. This month the winter blend of fuel will come back to the market, likely seeing an uptick in price

Imports of Renewable Diesel increased to start off 2024 per EIA. The rise of renewable fuels has begun to soak up demand for higher petroleum blends of fuel, as many cities around the country are beginning to develop renewable fuel standards. Many cities within the Pacific Northwest are leading this charge as The City of Portland has continued its push for completely renewable diesel by 2030.

fuel-market-report-star-oilco-5-18-24

Important Note: Per the City Of Portland, “Distributors in the City of Portland are required to meet the minimum biofuel content requirements for all fuel they distribute beginning on May 15, 2024. All diesel fuel distributed to retail stations, non-retail dealers, or wholesale purchaser-consumers must include a minimum of 15% biofuel content, from either renewable diesel or biodiesel. This requirement increases to 50% on May 15, 2026, and 99% on May 15, 2030”.

Crude oil is trading below $80 for the seventh time in ten weeks, at a current price of $74.81/barrel, $4.14 lower than last week, as oil prices trended downward this past week.

Crude oil is the main ingredient for gasoline and diesel. Per AAA, on average about 50% of what you pay at the pump is the price of crude oil, breaking down as 25% refining, 11% distribution & marketing, and 14% taxesa helpful breakdown for consumers wondering why they are paying the prices that they pay. Crude Oil is trading at $70.67/barrel compared to $74.81/barrel,  last week and $75 a year ago.

It’s essential to recognize that fuel prices result from a complex interplay of the factors mentioned above and other factors regionally. Additionally, prices may vary by specific regions within Oregon and Washington. The rack average for E10 fell $0.10/gal, while B5 jumped $0.10/gal and B20 inched up $0.03/gal. The summer blend of fuel is soon to be leaving the market on September 15th, as refineries switch back to the winter blend of fuel. This will likely cause supply bottlenecks and increases in price for fuel across the board. During this time refineries often slow operation and experience down times as they make the switch to winter fuel.

Fuel Market News

Prices have continued to drop throughout the market affecting the wholesale market more than retail stations. Rack averages are down for diesel and gas. B5 dropped $0.03/gal while B20 dropped $0.04/gal with gasoline having the biggest drop this week of $0.08/gal. The retail market did not see these pricing shifts trickle down, as the retail average for gasoline and diesel in Oregon did not drop more than $0.04, a pricing shift hardly noticeable by drivers. Summer demand for fuel has seemed to blow by this year as prices have been relatively low all summer. We may see prices trickle up as we approach the Labor Day weekend and the uptick in travel.

Fuel Market News

The market experienced mixed price fluctuations this past week, as gasoline prices jumped and diesel prices dropped. The retail market didn’t see much of this fluctuation as the retail average for both gas and diesel only moved a penny. Meanwhile, the wholesale market saw the rack average for E10 jump $0.07/gal while B5 & B20 dropped over $0.07/gal. We are entering August and surging summer fuel demand has yet to arrive. It is typical for fuel demand to increase during the summer but demand has been relatively low this year. This may be a welcoming sign as fuel prices could continue to drop once the summer fuel blend is off the market in September.

Fuel Market News

Fuel prices fell this past week across the board. Rack averages fell $0.13 for B5 and $0.16 while rack averages for E10 fell $0.04. Presses have continued to fall over the last 3 weeks. This is surprising as crude oil pieces have been relatively low, and fell to $76/barrel over the weekend.
