Similar to petroleum-based diesel which is hydro-treated, renewable diesel is made through a either a hydrogenation or Fischer-Tropsch process instead of a chemical process, by which biodiesel is derived. Both modern diesel and Renweable Diesel are made by cracking a feedstock and reforming it into a modern on-road fuel. But apart from petroleum fuel, which is made from crude oil and other hydrocarbons contained in natural gas (fossil fuels), renewable diesel is made from natural fats or vegetable and palm oils, making it a much cleaner, lower carbon content fuel for diesel vehicles.

Renewable Diesel is a next generation biofuel with impressive performance improvements when compared to petroleum derived diesel. Star Oilco’s Renewable Diesel is domestically sourced and is a breakthrough product for lowering tail pipe emissions as a drop in fuel.
Renewable Diesel can be used by any diesel fleet without any conversion concern. Fleets moving to Renewable Diesel fuel will see over a 20% drop in hydrocarbon emissions, over a 40% reduction in particulate emissions, and over 50% reduction in CO2 emissions associated with the fuel when compared to petroleum diesel.
Renewable diesel is made from the same feedstocks as biodiesel, but is virtually identical chemically and physically to petroleum diesel. Instead of using transesterification as biodiesel does, the crude feedstocks are treated with hydrogen and pressure to process it into fuel. The resulting fuel conforms to the same standards of petroleum diesel (ASTM D975) while reducing carbon, and requiring no changes to existing infrastructure of current fleets.
Because of the feedstocks this fuel already starts at a lower carbon footprint than traditional petroleum fuels. REG reports that,
“Compared to ULSD, renewable diesel reduces total hydrocarbons by more than 10 percent, particulate matter by nearly 40 percent, carbon monoxide by 25 percent and nitrogen oxides by 15 percent.”
California who has been using renewable diesel since at least 2011 when the Low Carbon Fuel Standard program began, has shown a reduction of 18 million tons of CO2. In 2018, California estimates that they saved 4.3 million tons of carbon dioxide. (Source)
